“Being Person-Centered…Mapping the Road to Recovery, Resilience and Wellness”
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Marriott Madison West
1313 John Q. Hammons Dr.
Middleton, WI
This workshop covers systems transformation from provider directed to a belief that consumers can, and should, direct their own care. PCP incorporates the philosophy that consumers and providers are able to build a collaborative relationship which supports consumers in their journey towards self-identified recovery. PCP empowers people to take responsibility for their own recovery. It expects that relationships between consumers and providers are based on mutual respect, sharing and hope.
Day two of the workshop is spent learning the documentation style which reflects PCP philosophy and protocols from assessment and formulation through Recovery Plans. This portion of the workshop includes practice in small groups with the development of a Person-Centered Recovery Plan and feedback from presenters and peers in the large group setting.
The training objectives are as follows:
- Identify how emerging new frameworks of person-centered recovery, resiliency and wellness differ from past and current practice to guide the plan of care and meet medical necessity.
- Understand the importance of a clinical formulation from assessment data.
- Define the key elements of a treatment/recovery plan as a roadmap to recovery and wellness.
- Be able to develop an interpretive summary and person-centered plan.
There is no cost for this training, thanks to a limited grant from CMS to the Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. However, travel expenses, including mileage, lodging and meals, will have to be covered by the provider agency or county.

Safe Medication Use as an Essential Component of Wellness among People with Mental Health Problems Training Teleconference (July 20, 2010)
Time: 2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m., Central Time (CT)
Only through coordinated interventions across all sectors of the health care system can we substantially reduce preventable injuries from using medications. All participants in the health care community have a role to play in reducing the risks and preventing injuries from medication use.
- Janet Woodcock, M.D., FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research
Tens of millions of people in the United States use prescription and over-the-counter medications. As many as 3 billion prescriptions are written annually, with an estimated 10 million adults (5.5 percent) reporting psychotropic medication use during a 1-month period. Too many people, however, suffer unnecessary discomfort, injuries, and even death as a result of preventable medication errors. Improving knowledge, safety, and quality in the medication-use system requires a shift toward a model of care based on consumer-provider partnerships and communication.
The SAMHSA 10x10 Wellness Campaign invites you to a free training teleconference entitled "Safe Medication Use as an Essential Component of Wellness among People with Mental Health Problems."
We encourage you to share this invitation with interested friends and colleagues.

The Impact of Trauma on Wellness: Implications for Comprehensive Systems Change (March 30, 2011)
2 to 3:30 pm Central (3 to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time)
Free SAMHSA teleconference training
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 60 percent of American adults say they endured abuse and other difficult family situations as children, otherwise known as adverse childhood experiences. Those experiences can have long-term health consequences and can create financial burdens on society due to the need for hospitalization, mental health care, child welfare services and/or law enforcement.
This teleconference will educate diverse stakeholders about comprehensive systems change, including preventing both harm and inadvertent retraumatization and ensuring that services and supports are welcoming, engaging, and culturally attuned. The goal is to help facilitate the healing process among people who have experienced trauma so that they can become fully engaged in their communities.

Fine Arts Center Main Theatre
La Crosse, WI
Join with others to listen to Pete Early tell his story about how difficult it is to get help for a family member with mental illness. He will specifically focus on how and why persons, such as his son, often end up in our criminal justice system and why that is wrong and will describe the results of a nine-month investigation that he conducted as a journalist inside the Miami Dade County jail where he followed persons with severe mental illnesses through the criminal justice system and out into the community to observe what services were available to them. Pete Earley was cited by Washingtonian Magazine in a cover story entitled, "Top Journalists: Washington's Media Elite," as one of a handful of journalists in America who "have the power to introduce new ideas and give them currency." He is the author of nine non-fiction books, including three national best-sellers, and three novels. His book, CRAZY: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness, was one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize and has won awards from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Mental Health America, the Washington Psychiatric Association, and the American Psychiatric Association.

Event Location: Radisson Paper Valley in Appleton, Wisconsin
We all know that you cannot provide or receive services in isolation. Issues around disability, employment and benefits intersect every day. Being aware of these intersections and knowing how to navigate the system is crucial.
This event provided information, resources, and training about shortcuts, potential detours, roadblocks and scenic routes on the road to disability, employment and benefits related issues! We will also make connections between mental health, transition times for youth moving from school to work or older adults moving to the next life phase that could include accessibility and benefits questions and concerns.

National Prevention Week (May 12-18, 2013)
This year's theme, "Your voice. Your choice. Make a difference.," emphasizes that the prevention of substance abuse and promotion of mental health starts with the choices each of us makes in our own life. Through our choices, we can set an example of health and well-being for others. With our voices—whether spoken or written—we can raise awareness of behavioral health issues and help create healthier and safer communities.
