Adams Mark Hotel - Buffalo, New York

In 1985, On Our Own of Baltimore, Maryland hosted the first Alternatives Conference, which was funded by Community Support Programs (CSP). The National Empowerment Center’s Executive Director Daniel Fisher recalls, "During the twenty years of Alternatives Conferences, our movement has inspired the nation to see that recovery is possible for all individuals. This history of consumer leadership played a role in recovery becoming the goal of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health. Alternatives is an opportunity for consumer/survivors to continue to lead this transformation to a caring system based on trust, hope, and a belief in the potential of each person to lead a full life."

"Like the mythological phoenix bird that rises from its own ashes in new power, many of us find new ways of being, functioning and making a difference,” according to NEC Director, Judene Shelley. “We rise from extreme emotional distress and use our experiences of personal recovery to transform our systems of care into caring systems."

Each Alternatives Conference offers in-depth training and technical assistance on consumer-delivered services and self-help recovery methods

Person Centered Planning Training (July 20-21, 2010)
“Being Person-Centered…Mapping the Road to Recovery, Resilience and Wellness”

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Marriott Madison West
1313 John Q. Hammons Dr.
Middleton, WI

This workshop covers systems transformation from provider directed to a belief that consumers can, and should, direct their own care. PCP incorporates the philosophy that consumers and providers are able to build a collaborative relationship which supports consumers in their journey towards self-identified recovery. PCP empowers people to take responsibility for their own recovery. It expects that relationships between consumers and providers are based on mutual respect, sharing and hope.

Day two of the workshop is spent learning the documentation style which reflects PCP philosophy and protocols from assessment and formulation through Recovery Plans. This portion of the workshop includes practice in small groups with the development of a Person-Centered Recovery Plan and feedback from presenters and peers in the large group setting.

The training objectives are as follows:
  • Identify how emerging new frameworks of person-centered recovery, resiliency and wellness differ from past and current practice to guide the plan of care and meet medical necessity.
  • Understand the importance of a clinical formulation from assessment data.
  • Define the key elements of a treatment/recovery plan as a roadmap to recovery and wellness.
  • Be able to develop an interpretive summary and person-centered plan.
There is no cost for this training, thanks to a limited grant from CMS to the Division of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. However, travel expenses, including mileage, lodging and meals, will have to be covered by the provider agency or county.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact Linda Sires at 608.264.9850, or 414.426.0496, or email lindaann.sires@wisconsin.gov

Safe Medication Use as an Essential Component of Wellness among People with Mental Health Problems Training Teleconference (July 20, 2010)
Time: 2:30 p.m.-4:00 p.m., Central Time (CT)

Only through coordinated interventions across all sectors of the health care system can we substantially reduce preventable injuries from using medications. All participants in the health care community have a role to play in reducing the risks and preventing injuries from medication use.
- Janet Woodcock, M.D., FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research

Tens of millions of people in the United States use prescription and over-the-counter medications. As many as 3 billion prescriptions are written annually, with an estimated 10 million adults (5.5 percent) reporting psychotropic medication use during a 1-month period. Too many people, however, suffer unnecessary discomfort, injuries, and even death as a result of preventable medication errors. Improving knowledge, safety, and quality in the medication-use system requires a shift toward a model of care based on consumer-provider partnerships and communication.

The SAMHSA 10x10 Wellness Campaign invites you to a free training teleconference entitled "Safe Medication Use as an Essential Component of Wellness among People with Mental Health Problems."

We encourage you to share this invitation with interested friends and colleagues.
