Trauma

There are many different responses to crisis. Most survivors have intense feelings after a traumatic event but recover from the trauma; others have more difficulty recovering — especially those who have had previous traumatic experiences, who are faced with ongoing stress, or who lack support from friends and family — and will need additional help.

Women and Trauma
Women with mental illnesses often have often been abused.  Treatment which integrates counseling about the trauma stemming from that abuse increases the effectiveness of treatment.  To learn more about it, visit the following Web site: Women, Co-Occurring Disorders and Violence Study.   A study published in April 2008, "Intimate partner violence and women's physical and mental health in the WHO multi-country study on women's health and domestic violence: an observational study," confirms that women throughout the world are physically and mentally harmed by violence from men.

The Journey of Self-Discovery: A Study Guide for Trauma Survivors, was developed by New Partnerships for Women, an organization in Madison, composed of consumers/survivors, mental health professionals, researchers, educators, and advocates. The topics, which include information about the scope of trauma, the effects of trauma, symptom self-management, meeting basic needs, and self advocacy, were all identified as key issues by consumers/survivors. It can be used in training programs or as a self study guide for individuals. The Journey of Self Discovery is now on The Anna Institute website at www.TheAnnaInstitute.org.
