National Organizations
The following list includes many organizations that provide information, support and/or advocacy for persons with mental illnesses, their families, and/or mental health professionals. Organizations that focus on specific disorders are listed on our Organizations by Disorder page.
- American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) - "...assisting parents and families in understanding developmental, behavioral, emotional, and mental disorders affecting children and adolescents..."
- American Psychiatric Association - world's largest psychiatric association
- American Psychological Association - world's largest association of psychologists
- National Mental Health Information Center of the Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
- NAMI - The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill is "a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of consumers, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders."
- NICHCY (National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities) - general and in-depth information about physical, mental, and emotional disabilities.
- National Institute on Mental Health (NIMH)- division of the National Institute of Health. The mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is to diminish the burden of mental illness through research.
- Mental Health America (MHA) - Formerly the National Mental Health Association, the MHA is "the country's oldest and largest nonprofit organization addressing all aspects of mental health and mental illness. With more than 320 affiliates nationwide, MHA works to improve the mental health of all Americans, especially the 54 million people with mental disorders, through advocacy, education, research and service."
